STATION 6 - AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Six to ten thousand years ago, the Coast Miwok Indians resided here. In 1836, Mexico sent Guadeloupe Vallejo to help protect
the area from a feared Russian invasion. In 1852, more settlers moved into the area and the town, Newtown, was established
where the Rocky Dog Park is located. The river meandered by Newtown and was judged as impossible for further navigation
upstream. A few years later the channel was straightened, allowing Petaluma to prosper while Newtown became history.
