Welcome to Station 5

STATION 5 - PICKLEWEED

The land surrounding the brackish central pond is dominated by one species of plant, Pickleweed. This plant stores excess salt in tiny sacs called vacuoles. In the autumn the vacuoles turn red and fall away, ridding the plant of excess salt. Pickleweed is edible for humans and a source of food for the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse in Alman Marsh.
