STATION 15 - TULE PLANTS
Cattails and tules need a yearlong wet environment, preferably in several feet of fresh or slightly brackish water, as in
the freshwater channels. Cattails have female flowers that look like cigars, or a cat's tail, while tules have flower
clusters near the tips of the stems. Muskrats eat the cattail roots, stalks and shoots, while Marsh Wrens weave nests from
the down. In April, the strange mating call of the American Bittern (a declining species of heron) is sometimes heard from
within the clusters, sounding like a broken water pump!
